Description
Smartphones can be a major part of a young person’s daily life. 95% of teenagers in the US have regular access to a smartphone and the average teenager receives almost 200 cell phone notifications a day.
Constant smartphone use may have significant detrimental effects on the health of young, developing brains including harming attention span, contributing to sleep deprivation, worsened academic performance, and a variety of mental health issues.
Because of the impacts of smartphones on student health and wellbeing, the state of Ohio recently passed a law that requires schools to adopt policies around cell phones that limit their negative effects in the classroom. This resource briefly outlines the new law, and its purpose.
More information and a sample school policy can be found from the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce at https://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Student-Supports/School-Wellness/Cell-Phones-in-Ohio-Schools
