Description
OhioKAN and Ohio School-Based Center of Excellence for Prevention & Early Intervention collaborated to create this guide to creating kinship-friendly schools. Kinship care is not uncommon with 5% of children in Ohio living in kinship care homes and over 4% of Ohio children being raised by kin. Awareness and knowledge of kinship care within schools is vital as it improves children’s educational experiences and allows schools to meet their needs more effectively.Â
This guide was created for educators, administrators, and school staff. It provides information on how to best support students and their caregivers. It covers what kinship care is, why understanding kinship care is important, trauma, common assumptions about kinship care, how kinship care interacts with school enrollment and school climate, and policies and programs that may impact kinship care families. This guide is an excellent resource for schools looking to best support their students and caregivers.Â
