Description
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) published information regarding childhood trauma. The NCTSN defines trauma as an event a child is involved in or witnesses and is intensively threatened by it. One type of trauma the NCTSN recognizes is early childhood trauma. Early childhood trauma involves traumatic experiences that occurred to children aged 0-6. These traumas may be the result of physical or sexual abuse, domestic abuse, natural disasters, accidents, or war. Younger and older children experience behavioral and physiological symptoms associated with these experiences. However, younger children cannot express in words whether they feel afraid and, as a result, have difficulty regulating their behaviors and emotions. The NCTSN website includes the effects on children due to this trauma, along with screening and assessment tools, interventions, and various resources.
