Description
This resource allows parents and educators to see the benefits of an online peer support group. There are three main reasons to encourage a student or child to engage in a peer support group.
Ease of use: The support group typically operates on an online platform such as a secure chat room, video conferencing platform, or dedicated forum. This allows members to participate from the comfort and privacy of their own homes, eliminating geographical barriers and making it accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds. These support groups are simple for a busy life, and don’t take away from a regular schedule like in-person groups or other types of therapy might.
Confidentiality: Confidentiality and privacy are paramount in an online peer support group for trauma. Members are typically required to adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines to ensure that the information shared within the group remains private and secure. There is often a facilitator that ensures the privacy of each individual. Sessions may be facilitated by trained moderators or peer leaders who ensure that discussions remain supportive, respectful, and focused on the needs of the group members. Facilitators may provide guidance, encouragement, and structure to the discussions while also allowing space for individuals to share their experiences and insights.
Resource Sharing: Members may also share resources, such as articles, books, podcasts, or therapeutic techniques, that have been helpful in their own trauma recovery journey. This allows for knowledge sharing and provides additional tools and strategies for coping and healing.
