Description

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), in partnership with the Entertainment Industries Council, created the Power of Language and Portrayals: What We Hear, What We See series. The goal of the initiative is to improve the portrayal of people living with substance use disorders and eliminate bias and discriminatory undertones.

Educational webcasts were produced to teach the media the appropriate language to use when writing about individuals with substance use disorders or those in recovery. The webcasts present discussions between behavioral health professionals, entertainment creators, and individuals recovering from substance use disorders, along with treatment and recovery services available. While the intended audience is media professionals, there is good information for healthcare professionals and educators to learn about in their own roles and language used. For example, you might want your marketing or communication professionals to review the webcasts.

Topics of the series include the impacts of trauma, treatment and recovery, the transition to recovery, and primary care provider challenges. When issues surrounding substance use disorders are depicted accurately, and the reality of hope in recovery is amplified, the public can better understand them and change the culture.
