Description
A safety plan is a personalized, protective strategy that a person creates with a mental health professional like a counselor, social worker, doctor, or therapist. Safety plans are designed to help individuals safely cope with crises, through coping skills and resource utilization.
This resource can be used by healthcare providers, school counselors, and parents to help create a safety plan with a child or teen. The provided safety plan can be filled out with a trained mental health professional and includes signs a crisis may be developing, coping skills that can help take your mind off of something upsetting, people or resources you can reach out to for help, and strategies for creating a safer environment.
A safety plan can be an important tool in keeping someone safe during a mental health crisis and as part of suicide prevention, but remember it should always be accompanied by support from a professional!
