Description
School-Based Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment: An Implementation Playbook is a resource published by Reclaiming futures, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, and King County Best Start for Kids and is based on the implementation of Tickit Health’s Check Yourself tool. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment, also known as SBIRT, is a public health approach that is used to screen for substance-related risk on all levels and has recently been expanded to screen for other mental health concerns. School-Based SBIRT has been found to be a highly effective screening tool and allows schools to be proactive about student’s health and safety rather than reactive.
The playbook includes information on the issue of substance-related risks and mental health concerns for students, what SBIRT is, and how it can play a role in addressing this issue in schools. It provides ways to measure fidelity and outlines 10 plays for implementing and utilizing SBIRT:
- Assess SB-SBIRT alignment with existing school systems of support
- Identify a screening strategy and relevant tool
- Plan for confidentiality, caregiver permission, and legal considerations
- Identify and train SBIRT teams, develop a school-wide communication plan and timeline
- Develop SBIRT team tools: protocols, workflows, and resource lists
- Implement SB-SBIRT screening
- Implement SB-SBIRT brief intervention and referral
- Develop data tracking and performance measures
- Utilize data-driven strategies for decision-making and sharing successes
This playbook is a useful resource for educators and administrators looking to implement SBIRT or trying to find a way to be more proactive about students’ health and safety concerning substance-related risks and mental health concerns.
