Description
Suicide is a major public health problem in the United States and around the world. Suicide claims the lives of over 48,000 americans a year and is one of the leading causes of death in teenagers and young adults according to the NIH. Unfortunately, the impacts of suicide and suicide attempts are even more far-reaching. Screening is a vital step in the prevention of suicide.
The Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) is an evidence-based screening tool created by the National Institute of Mental Health approved for use in children 8 and up. If a patient screens positive they should receive a brief suicide assessment from a trained clinician which may be followed up with a more comprehensive mental health evaluation.
You can access this resource and learn more about ASQ at

Please ensure you are working with a trained mental health professional when considering use of a suicide screener. Do not leave a child or young person alone if they are at risk to themselves or others.
If you or someone you know are in a mental health crisis, call or text 988. If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, dial 911.
