Description
In collaboration with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. This student-centered framework aims to enhance health and learning in schools by fostering collaboration between education and health professionals. While the model places the student at the core, it also highlights the critical role of communities in supporting schools, the link between health and academic performance, and the importance of evidence-based school practices.
The WSCC model is built around ten key components:
- Physical education and physical activity
- Nutrition environment and services
- Health education
- Social and emotional climate
- Physical environment
- Health services
- Counseling, psychological, and social services
- Employee wellness
- Community involvement
- Family engagement
The model emphasizes both the physical and psychological aspects of the school environment and encourages students to take an active role in their own health and education. Families and communities also play a vital part by promoting healthy behaviors across multiple settings and by providing essential resources for student success.
The WSCC website offers a variety of evidence-based strategies and practices organized by each of the ten components. These strategies can be implemented before, during, or after school to support holistic student development.
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has also developed its own student-focused model, which shares a similar goal: to provide safe, supportive, and enriching learning environments for all students.
